The aim of this worksheet is to promote thought and discussion about a series of connecting issues to do with conservation and the environment. Recognising that students will often have differing views and even loyalties in relation to these issues, the worksheet is designed to address them in a fun non-judgmental way.
The ranking and scoring “system” is clearly subjective and reflects the views of the author, but – like everything – it is open to debate.
additional activities
Conduct some form of environmental service during every field trip (even if it is only for a few minutes).
Survey and record the kind of rubbish that people discard in a public place (e.g. a beach). The information gathered can be used in follow-up classroom activities, such as analysing the major types of rubbish and developing solutions.
Divide the 16 topics between students and ask them to make a list of groups who have a vested interest – one way or another – in particular outcomes relating to the issue. For example, the tourist industry would have a vested interest in keeping our natural places free from litter. People who litter usually do so due to the simple convenience, even though it is not in their real interests and they could be subject to penalty or opprobrium.
