28: “Take nothing but photographs …

  1. Don’t collect rocks, shells, flowers, nests, living creatures, etc.
  2. It costs us very little to make the planet a better place by picking up other people’s rubbish.
  3. If you put your rubbish in a communal rubbish bag, the bag will get too heavy and no-one will want to carry it.
  4. If you dangle rubbish outside your pack, the rubbish bag will get snagged on something and rubbish will go everywhere.
  5. Group latrines keep toilet waste in the one spot, which is better for privacy and for minimising impact.
  6. The biological layer is generally regarded as 150ml (or 6 inches) deep.
  7. Waterways can become contaminated by cat-holes dug in water courses.
  8. Cat-holes should be a minimum of 100 metres from a water course.
  9. Waterways can become contaminated with either germs or the chemicals in soaps if you wash your hands or dishes in creeks, rivers or lakes.
  10. If there is no toilet nearby, it is okay to pee out of view, well away from others.
