42: map reading 101

Suggested answers

1) Topographic maps are different most other maps because they show us the lie of the land.

2) Map dates are important because things change over time, especially man-made features. (The older a map, the more likely it is that old buildings will have disappeared, or new buildings will have appeared, etc.)

3) Natural features are more reliable than man-made features because natural features do not change as rapidly.

4a) 2cm = 1km

4b) 10cm = 5km

3cm = 1.5km

7.7cm = 3.85km

5) Advantage: There is greater detail.

Disadvantage: You will often need to carry more maps.

6)

The importance of being able to read maps. (Perhaps Mr K should have let the students navigate?)
