further activities

  1. Individually or in groups, provide students with topo maps and ask them to make a list of all the information that they can glean from their map. The focus here would normally be on topography, but often the names of things especially tells us something of the history and land use of the area (e.g. Dutchmans Track, Crystal Mines Track).
  2. Ask students to make predictions about the nature of a proposed walk (e.g. level of difficulty, landmarks, likely views, presence of water, exposure to cold winds, etc.) For the purposes of this activity, the walk could be broken up into sections. (This task can be conducted in the classroom or during the walk.)
