Reasons why the girls won:
1) The girls kept their paddles on opposite sides.
2) The girls (mostly) were pushing the water in the opposite direction to the way they wanted their boat to go. (This answer may need thinking about.)
3) The girls were paddling in time.
4) As soon as they started to go off course, the girls corrected early with the effective use of a stern rudder.
5) Even when the rear paddler was using the stern rudder, the front paddler kept paddling.
6) To be able to do all of the above, the girls obviously stayed focused and concentrated.
